What’s With The Name?

I know it’s the day before Thanksgiving and I should be sharing something Thanksgiving-ish.  Not gonna happen.  But I fully intend to post a few family recipes after the holiday.  My grandma makes a mean stuffing and I would be doing the world a disservice not to share.

In the past few months, I’ve gotten several emails, comments, and messages asking about the name of this blog.  I’ve also read some really mean and nasty things about it, too.  That’s always fun.  I just got another question about it today, so I figured I’d take a few minutes to explain.

If you read the tagline on the header above, it’s pretty self explanatory, but I can also see how the name might cause you to infer something completely inappropriate, too {cue maniacal laughter}.  It’s all just a play on words, people.  That’s it.  Nothing more.  Since this is a food/home/décor/RANDOM blog, the name is just that…something that incorporates a little bit of all of it.

Pearls, Handcuffs, and Happy Hour

Here’s how it all breaks down…

Pearls = June Cleaver.

I’m far from the iconic TV mom, but every now & then I try to play the part of a 1950’s domestic goddess. **Try** being the operative word.  I’m far from it.  Truth be told, I‘m typically cooking my my granny jammies because I couldn’t wait to rip off my work clothes and get comfy.  The house is a mess 95% of the week because I’m just too tired to worry about it.  I’ve got no less than 5-6 piles of laundry in the laundry room at any given time.  The kitchen is a mess…an absolute TORNADO…while I’m cooking and heck if I can get everyone in this household to eat the same thing.  I give up. {PS:  I don’t own any pearls}

Handcuffs = Martha Stewart.

Now go ahead and get your mind out of the gutter people.  I don’t own any of these, either.  But you might remember that the goddess of all things beautiful and crafty was once in prison…hence the handcuffs.  I don’t plan on heading down that same ill-fated road she traveled, but every now and then I like to get my “Martha” on and craft a few things and try to decorate the house, too.  That’s where the handcuffs fit in. {See, not totally terrible ;)}

Happy Hour = That’s all me :)

I enjoy Happy Hour.  Yes, I do enjoy the kind of happy hour you can only find at your local brewery, but I also enjoy the “happy hour" I get every night before bed…that’s the one hour of peace and quiet I get when everyone in the house is sleeping.  I also enjoy the “happy hour” I get when I get my boys ready for bed each night…the crazy bathtime, stories before bedtime, prayers, and cuddles.  That’s where I got ‘happy hour’.

While I realize that it’s a “train wreck” of a blog name, I like it.  And it makes me chuckle thismuch every time I open up the blog.  And if you were ever curious or wondering what I was on when I decided to name my little slice of cyberspace, now you know :)

DISCLAIMER:  I am NOT a writer nor am I a chef.  I’m just a mom who likes to eat, share recipes with others, and write about it all like we’re talking on the phone :)

On that note, I hope you all have a very, VERY happy Thanksgiving!

  5. Cara,

    One of the things I LOVE about both of your blogs is how clever you are with your words. You are always coming up with the best names for things. I usually have a boring name for a center like "match a word". Boring! I try to think, "what would Cara Carroll name this?" I wish that worked! ha! I'm sorry you got some nasty emails though. :( I totally appreciate your play on words and seriously get a giggle from so many of your names for centers and stuff. Keep it coming! Your creativity shines through this way. I just love to see what you come up with!

I am sorry that people feel the need to judge you and the name of your blog....they need to remember what their Mama's taught them "If you don't have anthing nice to say, don't say anything at all!". You and your blogs are wonderful...please do not let a few people ruin for all of us that love to read them.

  16. Cara-- I love your blog and honestly would be devastated if you stopped blogging. As a teacher I loved using your classroom blog, but now that I'm blessed to be a SAHM I am using this blog more than ever. I adore you and love your recipes! Poo on the people that cannot Thumper's mom's famous words on their mind always-- If you can't say something nice---don't say anything at all! Love the name and love that you are creative enough to think up this cute name! KEEP ON BLOGGIN MY FRIEND!

  17. I always thought the Handcuffs were needed to keep your kids out of your hair or to get them to play nicely by handcuffing them together. They seem like sweet kids though, so I don't know what I was thinking. The name is playful and funny. Never apologize for your brilliance.

  19. I don't usually comment, but I yearned for a name as cool as yours when I was naming my blog. I kept asking myself, why can't I come up with something as great and catchy as "Pearls, Handcuffs and Happy Hour"!
    Don't let anyone get you down!

  22. Ohmiword! (As you would say). Although I loved the explanation, I can't believe you felt the need to explain. If anyone has followed you on any of your blogs, instagram, facebook, etc, they should know you are not that type of person! I adore you, your faith, your blogs and your hilarious sense of humor! Just wanted you to hear a little positive feedback from a faithful follower! Keep doing what you're doing because you are so good at it!

  23. I have been reading this blog, your family blog and (mostly) your teaching blog for a few years and you are so, SO talented at what you do on all fronts! It baffles my mind that people have negative things to say at all about you, not that you put up a perfect front but because you just seem so real. I've never commented before but wanted you to know that the nice words may not be as loud in internetland but they are so deserved!

  24. I too, am a huge fan! Being a teacher and mommy myself, I am in constant pursuit of inspiration (for both worlds!). Therefore, I absolutely rejoiced when I found your blogs! I commend you and sincerely appreciate you sharing your hard work and creative ideas. I can only imagine how iconic you are to your students, as well as your family. I have never commented on a blog before, but I felt it necessary to express thanks and gratitude for being so open with the public. It's made a big difference in my teaching and journey through motherhood! You've so eloquently displayed your passion for life, albeit revealing the everyday normalcies all moms can relate to. I adore your tongue in cheek title. I could go on and on about how amazing you are, so I'll sum it up with this: YOU GO GIRL!

  26. Just found your blog and am INSTANTLY hooked - The art about not being able to get out of your work clothes and into jammies so much! Also, the way you hare your recipes, about the same way I share mine. When I write a recipe for a friend, I write a group of ingredients, then share how to make that part of the recipe too. Thanks for sharing!!
